DIHADRON FRAGMENTATION FUNCTIONS INPROTON+PROTON COLLISIONS AT THE RELATIVISTIC HEAVYION COLLIDER (RHIC)byMUHAMMAD ELNIMRAugust 2010 Advisor: Dr. Claude Pruneau Major: High Energy Nuclear Physics Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Measurements of azimuthal correlations at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider(RHIC) have shown an away-side that is suppressed in Au+Au collisions comparedto proton+proton/Deuteron+proton collisions. Such suppression is taken as a signa-ture of the predicted QCD dense medium. However, the near-side of the azimuthalcorrelations shows little modification. The near-side of such correlations is related tothe ratio of the dihadron fragmentation function to the single one. As such, dihadronfragmentation functions shall provide a better basis for the interpretation of the near-side correlations. Dihadron fragmentation functions in p+p collisions also provide abaseline of such measurements in heavy ion collisions.

Diffraction at Rhic

The relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) offers many opportunities to study diffraction in pp, pA and AA collisions. Because both proton beams can be polarized, RHIC offers the unique possibility of studying polarization effects in diffraction. We will introduce diffraction at RHIC and present three compelling physics topics: hard diffraction with polarized beams, identification of exotic mes...

This is a review of the physics prospects for relativistic heavy ion collisions in the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The motivation for the study of superdense matter created in relativistic heavy ion collision is the prospect of observing a novel state of strongly interacting matter, the quark-gluon plasma. Experiments at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Col...

Accessing Transversity in Double-Spin Asymmetries at the BNL-RHIC

We give upper bounds for transverse double-spin asymmetries in polarized proton-proton collisions by saturating the positivity constraint for the transversity densities at a low hadronic resolution scale. We consider prompt photon, jet, pion, and heavy flavor production at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Estimates of the expected statistical accuracy for such measurements are pr...
